My amateur sonar scanning ability tells me that those monster size 15 footsteps that Jay Triano is hearing right about now are coming from Memphis. Marc Iavaroni was fired by the last place Memphis Grizzlies and after a 11 and 30 start. It’s been long rumoured that Bryan Colangelo hearts Iavaroni big time, dating back to his days as an assistant under Mike D’Antoni in Phoenix. One can only assume that his porous record shouldn’t preclude him from taking over the Raptors since they have an equally unimpressive record themselves.
I wonder if Colangelo is kicking himself for not doing away with Sam Mitchell this offseason and replacing him with Mike D’Antoni when he had a the chance? I mean he fired Mitchell 17 games into the season and replaced him with a good company man in Jay Triano. I have no ill will towards Triano, but I can only imagine that the Raptors would be much better off with D’Antoni on the sidelines. For evidence look what D’Antoni has done with the New York Knicks this season. He has them on them on the brink of the playoffs. That in itself is a major step forward considering the shambles Zeke Thomas left that franchise in.
So it won’t shock me in the least to see the Raptors hire on Iavaroni aka D’Antoni Light at some point either in season or shortly thereafter. For once I wish the Raptors would hire a coach with some pedigree and success ie D’Antoni when they have a chance (I’m not insisting on bringing back a Lenny Wilkens clone either) instead of getting some assistant coach who is cutting his teeth on the job.
