Outdoor hockey anyone? What better way to write off your day and cure your hangover. The NHL pulls off it’s made for American television “Winter Classic” today at Fenway Park in Boston. The game pits the Philadelphia Flyers vs. The Boston Bruins. It would appear that mother nature will cooperate and allow the game to go on as scheduled. I would love to be there today and have a seat on top of the Green Monster to watch the game and better yet get to see the scoreboard operators change the score by hand.
The fine folks of Boston even have the area boy scouts on the pay roll to distribute seat cushions to keep everyone’s derriere nice and cozy.
I’m guessing not all the seats at Fenway for today’s extravaganza are as good as the Green Monster ones — in fact, many are probably downright awful — but the game’s sense of specialness promises to continue the tradition established in the league’s first two New Year’s Day outdoor matches, at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo in 2008 and at Wrigley Field in Chicago in 2009.
For those of you wanting Dan Carcillo and Shawn Thornton to be the first to drop their mitts during an outdoor affair – don’t hold your breath. According to Puck Daddy it mostly likely won’t occur.
I had the opportunity to go to the “Winter Classic” in Buffalo a few years back. Read about my adventures here.
